our story

In 2001 Romios Taverna started serving traditional and homemade Greek food. Since then we are known for our quality and our original Greek cuisine.  

 Romios Taverna is located at Ceintuurbaan, next to the Sarphatipark and near the Albert Cuypmarket in the heart of “De Pijp”. This neighbourhood is also known for its diversity of residents, shops and its pleasant nightlife. 

The name Romios carries a long history. It was used in the Middle Ages, the Byzantine Times and during the period Greece was under the rule of  the Ottoman Empire at Constantinople. Romios meant Greek in nationality. Much can be said about the origin of the name and its history through time. Nowadays, the name Romios has survived in the Greek culture through sayings such as “Romios has filotimo” and as a definition for the virtues of the Greeks.

Our food is fresh, seasonal and prepared daily with love, care and respect to the needs of a healthy lifestyle. Greek cuisine is very rich in recipes and techniques, the diversity of the Greek landscape has formed our cuisine. Olive oil is the king of our ingredients, followed by seasonal vegetables, legumes, dairy products, meat and fish. 

In our menu we have chosen to have some of the classics. Classics of every household in Greece. No Greek has ever visited our taverna and did not feel nostalgia and joy with our menu.  

We invite you to taste all our menu items and have a pleasant trip and experience of the Greek cuisine. We create delicious memories.  

 Visit us and pick your food from our vitrine, taste the starters (meze/tapas) with a glass of Greek wine or ouzo or tsipouro. Have a nutritious soup to warm you up and mix & match from the variety of our main courses. Enjoy at the end a delicious baklava or a walnut pie. Fill your taste palette with many flavors and feelings.

Greece has a varied landscape with mountains, plains and islands. This includes a specific soil and climate, which in turn has resulted in several regional products being recognized and protected by the EU. For example apples from Pelion, oranges from Chania Crete, mastic from Chios, pistachios from Aegina, honey, various cheeses including the famous Feta, Olive varieties and Olive oils. And of course there are the various Grape varieties, Wines and Beans. A number of these products are for sale in our taverna and are also used in our cuisine.

In our market you will find a variety of products such as extra virgin olive oil, biological olive oil, olives, honey, Greek cheeses such as feta, Greek wines and spirits, a variety of products for cooking such as legumes, snacks and many more.   

All our products are from Greece.  We aim to bring to you quality and authentic products, and also support local companies in different regions of Greece at a fair price.
